Maintenance Technician

Planned preventative maintenance
- Complete planned preventative maintenance in line with schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
- Carry out routine inspections to identify wear, damage and potential failures before breakdowns occur.
- Complete servicing and preventative work within required timescales.
- Develop a strong understanding of each item of equipment and its maintenance requirements.
- Help develop and improve preventative-maintenance schedules.
- Complete maintenance records accurately and promptly.
Breakdown response and repairs
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns across the bakery and warehouse.
- Diagnose faults methodically and complete effective repairs that minimise downtime.
- Prioritise breakdowns according to safety and operational impact.
- Keep operational teams informed about faults, repairs and equipment availability.
- Test repaired equipment before safely returning it to service.
- Take ownership of maintenance issues through to satisfactory resolution.
Equipment reliability and fault finding
- Identify recurring faults and introduce practical reliability improvements.
- Investigate root causes rather than repeatedly repairing the same issue.
- Monitor equipment condition and highlight areas needing attention or investment.
- Recommend modifications that improve reliability, safety or efficiency.
- Work with manufacturers and suppliers when additional technical support is required.
Mechanical and electrical maintenance
- Maintain, service and repair bakery, production and warehouse equipment.
- Work on motors, bearings, belts, chains, pumps, gearboxes and other mechanical components.
- Adjust equipment and replace worn or damaged components.
- Maintain mechanical systems and, where competent and authorised, electrical systems and components.
- Support electrical fault finding where appropriately trained.
- Refer work outside your competence to a suitably qualified person or contractor.
Installation and commissioning
- Support the installation, commissioning and testing of new or replacement equipment.
- Work with manufacturers, suppliers and external contractors during installations.
- Add new equipment to the correct preventative-maintenance schedules.
- Ensure manuals, technical information and spare-parts requirements are documented.
Spare parts, contractors and records
- Maintain organised stocks of critical spare parts and maintenance consumables.
- Identify components that should be held in stock to minimise potential downtime.
- Monitor parts usage and arrange replenishment through the purchasing process.
- Liaise with manufacturers, suppliers and specialist contractors and provide accurate fault histories.
- Ensure contractors follow site safety, hygiene and operational procedures.
- Record maintenance, repairs, inspections, breakdowns, corrective actions and parts used clearly and promptly.
Health, safety and food hygiene
- Follow site procedures and relevant health-and-safety standards for every maintenance task.
- Use appropriate isolation and lock-off procedures before working on machinery.
- Keep guards, emergency stops and safety systems operational, and never bypass them.
- Report hazards, unsafe equipment, accidents and near misses promptly.
- Use appropriate PPE, safe working methods and well-maintained tools.
- Stop and escalate work where there is a risk to people, equipment or the business.
- Follow all hygiene, food-safety and allergen procedures in bakery areas.
- Prevent contamination risks and use food-safe materials and lubricants where required.
- Control tools, parts and materials in production areas and leave equipment and surroundings clean and safe.
- Work with Bakery and Hygiene teams when cleaning or sanitising is required before production resumes.
Housekeeping and cross-department working
- Keep maintenance areas, tools, equipment and spare parts clean, organised and safely stored.
- Remove maintenance waste and replaced components promptly.
- Leave bakery and warehouse work areas clean, tidy and safe.
- Plan work with Bakery, Warehouse and Operations teams to minimise disruption.
- Communicate issues and priorities clearly with team leaders and managers.
- Build positive relationships and provide practical technical support across the business.
Continuous improvement
- Recommend improvements to equipment, maintenance routines and working practices.
- Identify opportunities to reduce breakdowns and unplanned downtime.
- Improve preventative-maintenance routines using equipment history and experience.
- Find ways to extend equipment life and improve performance.
- Highlight machinery that may need replacement or future investment.
- Share learning from failures and recurring faults to prevent repetition.

- Mixers, ovens and other bakery machinery.
- Production, packing and conveyor equipment.
- Refrigeration and temperature-controlled equipment.
- Warehouse equipment, racking, doors, shutters and loading-area equipment.
- Pumps, motors, bearings, belts, chains, gearboxes and pneumatic equipment.
- Electrical, mechanical, general site and facilities equipment associated with bakery and warehouse operations.
Hours and working pattern
This is a permanent 38-hour position worked across four days each week, including one Saturday per quarter for planned servicing and larger maintenance tasks. Reasonable flexibility may occasionally be required for urgent failures or operational needs.
Essential skills and experience
- Previous maintenance, engineering or technician experience.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair skills.
- Practical experience maintaining machinery and equipment.
- A methodical approach to diagnosis and effective repairs.
- Good knowledge of preventative maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities.
- Strong health-and-safety awareness when working with machinery.
- Good communication and record-keeping skills.
- Reliable, organised and comfortable owning problems through to resolution.
- A practical, hands-on approach.
Desirable experience
- Bakery, food-manufacturing, production or warehouse maintenance.
- Electrical fault finding and relevant electrical qualifications.
- Conveyors, motors, gearboxes, pumps, pneumatic systems and automated equipment.
- Food-hygiene and food-safety requirements.
- Welding or fabrication skills.
- A relevant engineering or maintenance qualification.
Physical requirements
- Standing and walking for extended periods and working around production machinery.
- Lifting and moving tools, components and equipment.
- Working at height where trained and authorised.
- Working in warm, chilled or temperature-controlled areas.
- Bending, reaching and accessing machinery for maintenance and repair.
- Using hand and power tools with the correct equipment, training and safe systems of work.
